DSME bags KNOC semi deal

13.04.2010 16:47

Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) has awarded Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering a contract to build a newbuild semi-submersible rig destined to be deployed in the Zhambyl oilfield in Kazakhstan.

KNOC and DSME did not unveil the contract value. However, industry sources expect the project cost to be around $200 million.

The front-end engineering design on the rig was performed by Friede & Goldman and the detailed engineering will be undertaken by the South Korean shipbuilder.

The yard scope also includes the procurement of the drilling equipment on-board, according to a source close to the development.

The barge-shaped rig is expected to be jointly owned by KNOC and its Kazakhstan partners. Construction will take place at a shipyard in the Caspian region, with delivery targeted for the second quarter of 2012.
